When Steve Doyle founded HomeBuyingForLess in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, he wasn’t just starting a real estate business, he was changing an industry.
Throughout the years, Doyle watched housing prices skyrocket from an average of $122,100 in 1987 to $314,600 in 2007.* In spite of this dramatic increase, real estate firms continued to command their traditional 6% commission. In 1987, the buyer’s agent and the seller’s agent shared a total of $7,326.00 in commissions on that $122,100 sale. In 2007, they shared $18,876 on the $314,600 sale – the price of an average home. Commissions were escalating, and Doyle realized that the real estate industry was due for a change.
A bold idea began to take shape. “With escalating home prices and traditional commissions staying fixed, I realized that the forty-year-old business model was not scaling with today's economies. A new approach was desperately needed. With my passion for real estate and a confluence of fresh ideas, I was able to make home buying and selling for less a reality."
